What a special week!
We have been thinking about Mother's Day and the special ladies in our lives. The children wrote about why their Mummy is special to them and have even baked a yummy treat for their special lady to enjoy! The children also enjoyed rehearsing for their Special Lady Assembly this week. They also thoroughly enjoyed performing to their special ladies on Thursday.
This week, we have been learning more about maps. Pirate Percy visited again and left us another Geography challenge! The children worked in their classes to produce a 3D map of the school and Stoke Poges village. They used wooden blocks, different coloured material, wooden people and trees, stones, pine cones, wooden train track and paper to create their class 3D map of the School. In their independent learning time, the children then created their own 3D maps and drawings of the local area.
Outside, we have been enjoying planting and using lolly sticks to subitise. The children had to take it in turns to plant a number of lolly sticks and a partner had to subitise the amount! We are so impressed with the children's subitising skills within 5!

Week Beginning 17th March 2025
We have had a fantastic week in Reception!
We started the week by celebrating St Patrick's Day! We thoroughly enjoyed learning all about how St Patrick's Day is celebrated all round the world. The children enjoyed taking part in lots of themed activities, and we also read the story 'How to catch a Leprechaun'. The children then tried to create their own traps to catch a Leprechaun in the playground.
Reception received a letter from Pirate Percy asking them to use their map skills to help him identify symbols on his treasure map. We discussed the different symbols, such as 'x' marks the spot and the treasure chest, and the children thoroughly enjoyed finding the symbols on their own maps. We also spoke about compass directions and how Pirate Percy could avoid the shark infested waters! The children then created their own treasure maps in their independent learning time and even found some buried treasure in the sand pit! Pirate Percy also taught the children that an 'aerial photo' is a photo taken from the sky. He sent his parrot Poppy in to the sky and he sent us an aerial photo of our school. We then went for a walk around the school and found some of the features that were on Pirate Percy's aerial photo of our school!

Well done Butterflies and Ladybirds for a fantastic week of learning!
Week Beginning 10th March 2025
We have had another week of learning!
This week, we celebrated International Women's Day. We thought about and discussed the important women in our lives as well as important women in History. We then drew a picture of a woman who is inspirational to us. It was lovely to see the children drawing pictures of their Mummies, Aunties, Grandmas and other special people.
The children walked around the school grounds looking for signs of Spring. The children found that some of the trees were beginning to grow leaves and there are even daffodils growing at the front of the school. We picked a few of the daffodils to use for some observational drawing next week! We also used watercolours to paint some Spring flowers and used 'The Big Book of Blooms' for inspiration. The children learnt that one sign of Spring is blossom and they used toilet roll holders and paint to create their own blossom pictures.

The children also made their own binoculars in the junk modelling area and enjoyed bird watching in the playground. They saw pigeons, red kites and even a seagull! We look forward to observing how our natural environment continues to change throughout Spring!
Well done Ladybirds and Butterflies for a great week of learning!
Week Beginning 3rd March 2025
We have had a very exciting week celebrating Communication Week!
Throughout the week, we have been thinking about the ways we communicate with each other through our words, our body language and our facial expressions. We have had lots of circle time discussions about how important it is to communicate with each other by being kind, gentle and understanding towards those around us. We have been discussing how there are some people who cannot hear and some who cannot see and have thought about the different ways they can communicate.
Throughout the week, we have been learning some Makaton signs for various words and we have created a video to share them with you.
On Tuesday, we also celebrated Pancake Day. We learnt about why people celebrate Shrove Tuesday and why it is celebrated with pancakes. The children all had the chance to try their own pancake with a fruit topping of their choice. We also had a workshop from West End in Schools and we all enjoyed reinacting the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

On Wednesday, we thoroughly enjoyed welcoming our parents in for a 'Chat and Play' session. The children were so excited to share conversations and play board games with their special grown ups. They also performed the Poetry Basket poems 'Popcorn' and 'Pancakes' beautifully.
On Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day! The children came to school dressed as their favourite character or in their pyjamas with their favourite bedtime story. We thoroughly enjoyed having some Secret Readers throughout the day, as well as reading with our Year 6 Buddies!
Well done Ladybirds and Butterflies for a very busy week of learning!
Week Beginning 24th February 2025
What an exciting week of learning we have had!
In Maths this week, we have been learning the skill of 'subitising'. Subitising means seeing a number without having to count (e.g. seeing 3 dots and saying the number 3 without having to count the dots). The children have started to subitise in their environments too (e.g. "There are 3 spoons in the mud kitchen").
Challenge: Can you tell us an example of when you were able to subitise on your journey to school?
In Literacy, we have started looking at the story The Journey Home. We came in to the classroom to find Hattie Peck had left her suitcase in the middle of the carpet! Inside was a map, sun cream, seeds, binoculars and the book. The children all explored the suitcase and the map inside. We also discussed their predictions of what they thought the story was about. We explored the map that was in Hattie Peck's suitcase. On the map, we found out that the dark blue line was a motorway and we also found Stoke Poges. We even found our school!
In the story, Hattie Peck collects eggs from all around the world! We talked about some of the animals that lay eggs. We then worked in pairs to write a list of animals that lay eggs. The children worked well and took turns to write an animal. We used our phonics 'Fred fingers' to help us to spell the names of animals such as ants, crabs, frogs and hens.

We are looking forward to reading more of this story as the term goes on!
Well done Ladybirds and Butterflies for a fantastic first week back!
Week Beginning 10th February 2025
We have had a lovely week celebrating and learning about Valentine's Day!
We learnt about the story of St Valentine and why we celebrate Valentine's Day. The children created a cafe in the mud kitchen called 'The Heart Express' where they made some Valentine's treats and different recipes. The children have thoroughly enjoyed accessing a variety of Valentine's themed activities such as writing Valentine's Day cards, making love bugs in the playdough area, printing hearts with kitchen rolls, making love heart paper chains, filling hearts with red words and searching for treasure in the rose water outside.

We have also been learning about Kandinsky and the children recreated their own repeating heart paintings in the same abstract style. We were also lucky enough to be able to watch the Year 3 and 4 Production of 'Peter Pan'. The children loved the show and were so impressed with their performance!
Well done Ladybirds and Butterflies for an amazing half-term of learning!
Week Beginning 3rd February 2025
What an exciting week we have had in Reception!
We spent the first part of the week getting ready for our adventure to Antarctica. The children had their passport photos taken and we learnt about Antarctic animals and plants. We learnt that trees cannot grow in Antarctica because the roots are too large.
On Thursday, the children were so excited as we were going on an adventure to Antarctica! The children were given their passports in the lounge. They then made their way to the check in desk, where they met Mrs Jenkins who gave them their boarding cards. Once checked in, they made their way to security where Miss McDade put their bags through the scanner and Mr Headland scanned the children. The children then made their way to Passport Control where they met Mrs Benians, who stamped their passport. Our Air Hostesses, Miss Wicks and Mrs Harris, then showed the children to their seat on the aircraft. Our Pilot Captain, Ms Astley, welcomed the children on board and ensured a safe and timely departure and the children had a safety briefing from their Cabin Crew before take off. We enjoyed some in flight entertainment all about Antarctica and even wrote down some facts about Antarctica and Penguins. The Cabin Crew took the children's food and drink order before it was time to land in Antarctica. The children put their warm clothes on that they had packed and we disembarked the aircraft.

When we got back to the classrooms, there were lots of Antarctic and penguin themed activities for the children to explore. The children created some watercolour pictures behind penguin silhouettes, found and wrote sentences to describe penguin eggs, created their own penguins using paper and card, and even built a plane and reenacted their journey to Antarctica. Reception had the most amazing time in Antarctica and onboard the Rainbow Airlines flight from Stoke Poges School Airport.

On Friday, we celebrated Children's Mental Health Week. The children came in to school dressed as a colour to represent an emotion from Inside Out 2. We enjoyed talking about the things that make us happy and what we can do if we are feeling each emotion.

Well done Ladybirds and Butterflies for a fantastic week!
Week Beginning 27th January 2025
What an exciting week we have had!
This week, we have been learning all about Lunar New Year! We learnt about how it is celebrated all over the world and the story of the Zodiac calendar. The children reenacted 'The Great Race' and ordered the animals according to where they finished in the race. The children also learnt that this year is the year of the Snake! We discussed how those born in 2019 were born in the year of the Pig, and those born in 2020 were born in the year of the Rat. They have thoroughly enjoyed making collages and traditional lanterns and have been learning how to write numbers in Mandarin!
The children also learnt a traditional Lunar New Year greeting. Kung Hei Fat Choi means 'Congratulations and best wishes for a prosperous New Year!'

On Wednesday, we tried some oriental foods! The children were given the opportunity to try prawn crackers, sweet chilli sauce, rice noodles and sweet and sour sauce. We were so impressed with the number of children who were willing to try each food, especially the sweet chilli sauce! We also made a traditional pudding that is eaten during Lunar New Year celebrations. It consists of banana, cinnamon and sugar. Again, we were so proud of the children who tried it!

On Friday, we ended our whole school Star of the Week Assembly with a traditional Lion Dance. The children made lots of noise with musical instruments and held up snakes and lanterns that they had made.

We have had another fantastic week of learning!
This week, we have been learning all about Penguins! We have learnt some amazing facts about penguins, such as:
-
They have a thick layer of blubber to keep them warm in the freezing temperatures
-
They live in big groups called colonies.
-
There are over 17 species of penguins. The smallest species stands at just 12 inches and it is called a Fairy Penguin.
-
They huddle to keep warm.
-
All penguins that live in the wild will live south of the Equator.
We also learnt the life cycle of the Emperor Penguin. They start as an egg, then hatch and become a chick, then when they shed their grey fluffy feathers they become a fledgling and then an adult penguin. The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring non-fiction texts about Antarctica and have created their drawings of penguins using charcoal.

We have had another fantastic week of learning!
This week, we have been learning about the Polar Regions. We learnt that the South Pole is also known as Antarctica and the North Pole is also known as The Arctic. We learnt that the reason they are white on a map or a globe is because they are areas of land covered in snow or ice. We learnt about some of the animals that live in these polar regions and found out that polar bears and reindeer live in the Arctic and that penguins and elephant seals live in the Antarctic. We can't wait to continue exploring Antarctica and learn more about the animals that live there, especially the penguins!
The children completed an experiment to test understand how animals that live in the polar regions stay warm, especially in the freezing cold water. The children learnt about the thick layer of blubber that these animals have. The experiment involved the children putting one hand in to cold water. The other hand had a glove on. We covered the glove in lard and this acted like the layer of blubber that these animals have. The children found that when they put the hand with the glove on in the water, they couldn't feel the cold!

In Maths this week, we have been learning about teen numbers. The children have learnt numbers 11-15 and we have been using the Numberblocks episodes to introduce each one. The children have also been using these teen numbers in their learning time. There were some keys with numbers of dots on them and locks with the teen numbers on. The children had to count the dots on the keys and then match it to the lock. They found that when they had counted correctly and identified the correct lock, they could use the key to unlock it!

Well done, Ladybirds and Butterflies, for a fantastic first week back!
Week Beginning 7th January 2025
